Change
It is a very simple yet complex term, change. Make different, alter, substitute, evolve.
This series of pictures try to show the transformation of a city, of one of our cities, our capital Port Louis. A vibrant bustling city during the day that mutates into an eerie kind of place at dusk.
From day to night, from movement to stillness, from all to none.
Portraying iconic places in two different moments of the day illustrates that change, that conversion. Like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hide, showing the duality of the urban nature.
Motivation & Inspiration
Instead of reusing existing pictures which could illustrate the concept of change, I decided to create this special series and craft something brand new for the contest. The idea behind is to show the mutation of the urban spaces, how similar settings could change at different times of the day. That change in colour, movement, light, shadow, human activity – lots of variables that have an impact on the overall look. The combination of capturing spaces at different moments with long-exposure photography creates a unique effect, a change of perspective of places already known to the viewer.
Equipment
All pictures have been taken using a Sony Alpha A7R-III, with a Sony 16-35mm wide-angle lens. As mentioned, since all of them are long exposures, a tripod was use together with a ND-1000 filter for the daylight shots, in order to lower shutter speed and get that “sensation of movement” that I was looking for.
About me
My name is Nacho Sandoval, photographer at SPIEGELPHOTO. Literally by accident, a camera fell into my hands and I discovered the beautiful world of photography. Passionate about landscapes, urban / street photography, and whatever story that can be told in images.
Showing reality through the pictures, making them “talk” to the viewers, taking them to new places, feeling what I feel. Situations, emotions… This is what it’s all about.
